"A Photographer's Waterfront Retreat"

South County

SOUTHERN Maryland / South COUNTY

Our local call sign is "SoCo" because here, in Southern Anne Arundel County, after you cross the South River from Annapolis, life is calmer, more relaxed and yes a bit more rustic! Towns such as Galesville, Deale, Tracy's Landing and Shady Side all are rich in the history of Maryland, settled largely by Quakers, and based on agriculture and the fishing, crabs and oysters from the Bay.  Today, the rural heritage of South County is preserved and kept alive by many local entities, including the Salem Avery House (October Oyster Festival), the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (several hundred acres environmental conservation under the stewardship of world class scientists), as well as artists Muddy Creek Artists Guild, (visual artists who hold frequent shows) and many other activities through the year.  Of course, for a bit more excitement, we always have Annapolis just a 30 minute drive away, with all the cultural, social activity and shopping of Maryland's thriving State Capitol.

Fine dining

We believe that dining needn’t be expensive to be fine. South County offers several great options for seafood, including Pirates Cove, Thursday's, Skipper's Pier and the Brick House.

ANTIQUES

The Vintage Loop as it is known is a group of a half of dozen antique and consignment stores within about 30 minutes of each other if looking for that special item to fit in your living room or wardrobe is what you seek!

CHARTER FISHING

South County has plenty of options if you want to try your hand at fishing or crabbing. Try one of the many local charter boats at Happy Harbor during rockfish season.  Our watermen and their crab boats mean plenty of fresh local crabs. Of course you can always crab and fish off the pier from Cattail Landing.  A Maryland craft beer, or a pairing with a white wine with seafood or oysters on the grill is a great way to end the day!

Music Venues

Whether you’re looking for an intimate jazz club, large music hall experience, disco with a killer DJ, or eclectic music festival, nearby Annapolis has it. Some of the most fun and innovative bands, artists, and musicians flock to West St in the Annapolis arts district for its creative energy and diverse music scene. Take the opportunity to experience it all up close and personal. We promise you won’t regret it.
