About CATTAIL LANDING...

We hope you enjoy your visit to this quiet refuge from your busy life…

Cattail Landing is a retreat that is the result of our family’s life and travel overseas over the past 75 years.

The outdoor setting and view from Cattail Landing offer an on-going carousel of life on the Chesapeake Bay, from the early morning sound of the diesel engines of the crab boats going to run their trot lines, the high pitched call of osprey as they circle over the water in search of small fish, the ripple and slap of fish jumping out the water off the pier, and at the end of each day, the often spectacularly colorful sunsets, followed by the blue and purple of dusk falling on the Bay, and finally, on a clear night, the path of silver on the water as the moon traverses the sky across the horizon.

Our location in Anne Arundel County in Southern Maryland, with its rich history as one of the original 13 colonies, importance in economic activities such as tobacco farming and oyster harvesting, are still reflected in the life style, culture and activities of Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties today. Enjoy our famous blue crabs, historical sites, Amish culture, and frequent music, arts and crafts events.

Cattail Landing also reflects the experiences of three generations of our family history, with careers in tropical medicine, agriculture and rural development, and our overseas residence in Panama, India, England, Colombia, Spain, Argentina and Honduras. Living and working overseas gives a perspective on different cultures and values which is also part of what Cattail Landing seeks to offer to our guests.

Cattail Landing consists of two houses, the family residence and a guest house for visitors, on two and a half acres on a private road, at the confluence of the West River and Chesapeake Bay, and surrounded by the 30 acre Shady Cove Nature Reserve.

The guest house contains many items that reflect our family history,  including photography, artwork and furniture acquired during our overseas residence.

The outdoor facilities include the decks, pier, hot tub, and watercraft (canoe and kayaks) as well as the walking trails in the adjacent nature preserve.

Our proximity to Annapolis, Washington D.C. and Baltimore mean that you are only an hour away for world class museums, arts, sports and dining.

At the end of the day, returning to Cattail is always a pleasure, a retreat and refuge for rest and reflection…. We hope you will find that is the case for you as well!
